Forgiveness in Relationships

Icebreaker

• Ada was in her final year at the university and deeply in love with Charles.
• Their relationship had blossomed over the years, and both families had joyfully given their consent
for marriage.
• Wedding preparations progressed smoothly, and the future looked bright for the young couple.
• Then, just one month before the wedding, Charles made a shocking request.
• He pressured Ada to prove her love by surrendering her virginity as a birthday gift to him.
• Ada firmly refused. She had always resolved to preserve her chastity until marriage.
• What began as a disagreement soon became a painful conflict.
• To her surprise, some members of her family began pressuring her to give in.
• Feeling abandoned and emotionally exhausted, Ada eventually yielded to Charles’ demands
through tears.
• Two days later, her world collapsed.
• She discovered that Charles had travelled to the United Kingdom with her best friend.
• Every attempt to reach him failed.
• Heartbroken and devastated, Ada sank into depression and attempted suicide twice.
• The only words she eventually heard from Charles were: “Forgive me

Why Is Forgiveness Both Difficult and Necessary?

Ada’s story reflects one of life’s most painful realities: betrayal by someone we trusted and loved deeply. It is often said that to err is human; to forgive is divine. If Christians are created in the image and likeness of God and are called to imitate Him, then forgiveness is not merely an option but a vocation. This does not mean forgiveness is easy. The deeper the wound, the more difficult forgiveness becomes. Minor offenses are easier to forgive; betrayal, deception, humiliation, abandonment, and shattered dreams are far more demanding. Ada experienced all of these. Although she was initially right to insist on preserving her virginity until marriage, she eventually yielded under immense pressure. Charles then demonstrated a shocking lack of fidelity, honesty, and courage. Likewise, her family wrongly intervened in a matter where they should have protected rather than pressured her. Yet painful as the experience was, Ada escaped what could have become a lifelong marriage to a dishonest and manipulative man. What appeared to be a tragedy may eventually prove to be a hidden blessing. Scripture repeatedly reminds us that God can bring good out of evil and hope out of suffering. Still, before Ada could experience healing, she would first have to confront the difficult challenge of forgiveness.

What Does True Forgiveness Really Mean?

Forgiveness is one of the greatest acts of courage a human being can perform. Strong people forgive and move forward. Weak people often remain trapped in bitterness, revenge, resentment, and the constant reliving of past hurts. Forgiveness is an imitation of one of God’s most beautiful attributes. It acknowledges human weakness and vulnerability while opening the door to healing, freedom, and restoration.Importantly, forgiveness does not mean that the offense never happened, that the victim was not genuinely hurt, that the pain was insignificant, that justice no longer matters, or that the offender’s actions are approved. Ada had every right to feel hurt and angry. Nevertheless, for the sake of her emotional well-being, spiritual life, peace of mind, and relationship with God, she would eventually need to choose the path of forgiveness.

How Can a Wounded Heart Learn to Forgive?

Forgiveness means reaching a point where remembering no longer reopens the wound with the same intensity. Practical steps include acknowledging the hurt honestly, praying for God’s grace, seeking wise counsel, engaging in healthy activities, and spending time in prayer and reflection. Jesus teaches: “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Mt. 5:44). See also Mt. 18:15-23; Lk. 6:27-28; Lk. 23:34; 1 Pet. 3:9; Eph. 4:32.

Why Is Forgiveness Ultimately an Act of Freedom?

Refusing to forgive often feels like strength, but in reality it becomes a prison. Forgiveness is an act of liberation. It is not weakness, foolishness, or surrender, but the courageous decision to release the burden and reclaim one’s freedom. “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (Jn. 8:36).

Conclusion: Could Ada Ever Truly Forgive?

The greatest victory Ada could achieve would not be revenge, bitterness, or endless resentment. It would be finding the courage to forgive and move forward. Forgive and be free. For while the scar may remain, God’s grace can heal even the deepest wounds, and the heart that learns to forgive discovers anew the freedom and peace that only God can give.
